The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the Indian National Certification Body responsible for maintaining the Quality Standards of the products available in the Indian Market. BIS provides an ISI mark that has been used as a conformity mark for industrial products, indicating that the product meets the required Indian standard.
BIS appoints an auditor that visits the manufacturing unit, after auditing the site the auditor draws a random sample of the product that needs to be certified. This sample drawn is sent to the BIS recognized laboratory for sample testing. Once the BIS gets the sample report as per the required standards from the laboratory, BIS starts the license granting procedure.
As per the guidelines, BIS Certificate/Licence is mandatory to manufacture, import, and sell various products in India. Manufacturing of any product that comes under a mandatory certification scheme without a BIS Licence is a criminal offense and could result in imprisonment and a huge fine.
